In a ‘father-son’ showdown, Pohang Steelers tasted victory after a brilliant performance by their son.
Pohang defeated Seongnam FC 3-0 behind two goals from Lee Ho-jae in the round of 16 of the 2023 Hana OneQ Korea Football Association (FA) Cup at Tancheon Sports Complex at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Pohang, who punched their ticket to the quarterfinals, will face the winner of Gimpo FC-Gangwon FC.
The hosts lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation. Denilson started up front, supported by Shin Jae-won, Park Sang-hyuk, Ahn Jin-beom, and Jeon Sung-soo. Seongnam made a change at the start of the second half. They took off Ahn Jin-beom and Yoo Sun and brought on Park Tae-joon and Patrick. Seongnam launched a strong offense. Less than a minute in, Park Tae-joon’s exquisite penetrating pass found Shin Jae-won, but his shot was blocked.
In the first minute, Shin Jae-won’s cross was blocked by the goalkeeper. Park Sang-hyuk’s next shot was blocked by the defense’s physical defense. Seongnam’s determination to catch up was strong. A minute later, Shin Jae-won headed in a cross from Kook Tae-jung. Goalkeeper Hwang In-jae made a fingertip save to deny the goal.
Once again, Pohang did not miss the opportunity that came after the crisis. In the 13th minute of the second half, they broke down the opponent’s defense with a fantastic linking pass. Lee Ho-jae received a pass from Kim Seung-dae and calmly beat one defender to find the back of the net.
Seongnam didn’t have much luck with the goal. In the 33rd minute of the second half, Jeon Sung-soo took advantage of an opponent’s mistake. Park Chan-yong cleared the ball away from the empty goal.
Pohang countered right back. A minute later, Cho Jae-hoon’s heel shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. From the ensuing corner kick, Lee Ho-jae found the back of the net with a header but was ruled offside.
No further goals were scored after that. Pohang held on to their three-goal lead to advance to the FA Cup quarterfinals.
