‘Queen of short track’ Choi Min-jeong (25, Yonsei University), as expected, won the 31st Winter World University Games (Winter Universiade) with multiple gold medals.
Choi Min-jung won the women’s 500m short track speed skating competition held at the 1932 Rink at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York, on the 21st (Korean time). The day before, she won two gold medals in the women’s 1500m short track. 스포츠토토
Choi Min-jung was the fastest in the women’s 500m with a time of 44.050. Choi Min-jeong, who came in first from the start, crossed the finish line comfortably without missing the lead until the end.
China’s Yichao Wang and Jiyoon Park (Korea National University of Physical Education) took second and third place. Seo Hwi-min (Korea University) received a penalty and was unfortunately disqualified.
Choi Min-jung also sprinted in the mixed 2000m relay final. She tied for first place with Kim Kun-hee (Dankook University), Jeong Sung-woo (Korea University), and Kim Tae-seong (Dankook University) with a time of 2 minutes 44 seconds 728. The first runner, Choi Min-jeong, took first place and overpowered her momentum, and her juniors also sprinted, beating the U.S. (2:45:075) and scoring the first goal.
But she couldn’t win a gold medal. The judges of the tournament awarded penalties to all teams except for France, including Korea, the United States, and China. An official from the Korea Ice Skating Federation said, “It was determined that three teams misunderstood the number of laps at the site.” Initially, the website of the tournament indicated Korea’s gold medal, but the result was modified according to the final decision.
Choi Min-jung, however, is expected to add her gold medal on the 22nd. She will compete in the women’s 1000m and women’s 3000m relay at the same venue on the 22nd.
Kim Tae-seong, who won the men’s 1500m the previous day, also missed out on the mixed relay gold medal. However, on this day, he added a silver medal in the men’s 500m.
